The Historic Arcade Building: Webster University’s New Downtown Home
It has been nearly three decades since the Arcade Building at the corner of Pine and 8th Streets was open for business. That changed this week when the building came to life as Webster University students started classes in this new location.
To mark the special occasion, the University will host an open house for media and community partners at 3 p.m. Jan. 11. A reception will be held and tours offered. The public is welcome to attend.
The University is the anchor tenant of the renovated property. Building renovations concluded in early December, and the University has been moving in furniture and installing electronics in its 54,000 square-feet of space since then. Webster University occupies the first and second floors of the building as well as the mezzanine level.
First-floor space is dedicated to offices for student services and administration, an art museum and 130+-seat auditorium for lectures, presentations, and other events. The Gorlok Grind, a book store/coffee shop open to the public is expected to open mid-January. The mezzanine area has more offices. The second floor has offices for faculty (including dedicated space for adjuncts faculty), classrooms, and meeting areas for students. The rest of the building has been developed into apartments. Check Out The Webster University Book Club
Did you know Webster University offered a book club with meetings held in the Emerson Library over the noon hour?
In fact, we do. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 11. The topic: Damon Tweedy’s Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine. The book tells both the story of Tweedy’s medical school experiences as an African-American man interspersed with a broader discussion of health and health care issues related to race.
Join the discussion of the book and the issues Tweedy raises on Monday, Jan. 11, at noon in the Library Conference Room. Everyone is welcome.
